The perspectives and beliefs, they will be able

The
United States of America is undeniably becoming home to an ever-increasing
number of individuals from distinct racial and ethnic backgrounds. According to
the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanic population constitutes 17.8%, the African American
population constitute 13.3% and the Asian population constitutes 5.7%. Diversity is increasing in
the healthcare setting each year. Knowing how to care for patients of different
religious and ethnic backgrounds is very important to ensure that high-quality,
patient-centered care is provided.

The aim of any healthcare
organization is to provide high-quality patient care. This involves not only
doctors who deliver direct patient care, but
also the nursing staff who help them with that aspect. There is also the support
staff who help take care of daily administrative duties to ensure the work is
streamlined without any delay for the rest of the clinical care team.

With
growing diversity each year needing healthcare, it makes sense to employ a workforce
of
women, people of color, and LGBT individuals to gain a competitive edge.
Health care providers must have a firm understanding of how and why different
belief systems, cultural biases, ethnic origins, family structures, and a host
of other culturally determined factors influence the manner in which people
experience illness, adhere to medical advice, and respond to treatment.

Physicians
and other healthcare professionals who are unmindful of the potential impact of
language barriers, various religious taboos, unconventional explanatory models
of disease, or traditional “alternative” remedies are not only unlikely to
satisfy their patients but, more importantly, are also unlikely to provide
their patients with optimally effective care.

If we want to have healthcare organizations
capable of innovating, diversity is the key. Diversity enhances creativity.  It
encourages thinking from different perspectives and more productive
brainstorming sessions, leading to better decision making and problem-solving.
This effect takes place because people from different backgrounds, ethnicities,
races bring different information, opinions, and perspectives. people who are
different from one another bring unique information and experiences to the
table that helps solve the task at hand.

When members
of a homogeneous group need to make a decision, they will most likely agree
with one another. Because they understand one another’s perspectives and
beliefs, they will be able to easily come to a consensus. But when a diverse
group of members is present, they take notice that they are socially different
from one another and this changes their expectations. They are faced with
differences of opinion and perspective. They will need to work harder to come
to a consensus. People work harder in diverse environments both cognitively and
socially. There might be some resentment, but the hard work can lead to better
outcomes.
