nonhuman environment. With its prime sources having similarities with the birth
of modern environmentalist politics, ecocriticism produces chronological and hypothetical
models that engage the rising tide of ecological awareness in the 21st century.
Ecocritics collectively bring the tools and methods of the humanities to bear
on urgent questions for today’s age of global ecological crisis. Often
combining creative or non-traditional forms with established research methods,
ecocritics invent ways to use the humanities to engage our rapidly changing
environment. This discourse represents an attempt by humanities scholarship to
come to terms with a rapidly changing world.

This
research enumerates how Ecocriticism emphasizes all living
entities exist not only in a reciprocal
relationship with each other, but with their nonliving
environment as well. Man’s
greed to occupy nature’s place
and multiply prospects has caused a threat to nature’s place.
The issue of place exists for a long time, and is so high that it needs
immediate attention. Humans’

The five novels selected for this
study are Jeyamohan’s ‘The Forest’, Rajam Krishnan’s ‘When the Kurinji Blooms’,
Sa. Kandasamy’s ‘The Defiant Jungle’, Subrabharthimanian’s ‘The Coloured
Curtain’, Bibhutibhusan BandyoPadhyaya’s ‘Aranyak: of the Forest’ and Pundalik
Naik’s ‘Upheavel’.

The research work reverberates the
inseparable bond between human beings and nature. It is unimaginable and
unthinkable to have a life on this planet earth without the conducive nature.
The changes happing with the attitude of human beings towards nature is
highlighted in an elaborative way.

Ecocriticism came into existence

commonly defined as “the study of the relationship between literature and the

criticism to emerge at the end of the twentieth century, ecocriticism was
formalized as a literary theory in the late 1970s amidst concerns of
human-induced environmental degradation, which has forced human, especially
artists, to re-evaluate their relationship with nature. Ecocriticism has since
grown in areas previously untouched by literary theory.
