Everyone all time. Shaquille O’Neal, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin

Everyone who knows anything about or enjoys the game of basketball knows the famous name of Kobe Bryant. He was a legendary basketball player who lead the Lakers to five NBA championships in his golden career. People were certain that Kobe’s jersey number would be retired, but they never guessed that both of his jerseys would be retired. Kobe wore the numbers 8 and 24 during his 20 seasons at the Lakers. When players’ jerseys are retired, usually only one is retired, but Kobe is the first player to have two jerseys retired. Not even Michael Jordan, who wore the jersey numbers 23 and 45, received this honor. The Lakers hung both of Kobe’s jerseys on December 18, 2017 in a halftime ceremony when the Lakers hosted the Golden State Warriors. Outside the Staples Center, the Lakers made a makeshift amusement park called Kobeland to honor the legendary player. Kobe baskets and Kobe cornhole boards, 17-foot inflatable Kobes and one “Kobe-inspired” Ferris Wheel were the things that staredwere in Kobeland. The Golden State Warriors won by two points in overtime that game and now Kobe is the 10th player whose jersey hangs from the Lakers rafters. His jersey has joined the best Lakers of all time. Shaquille O’Neal, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, James Worthy, Jamaal Wilkes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Gail Goodrich, and Earvin “Magic” Johnson are the other Lakers players who had their jerseys retired. Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the Lakers President of Basketball Operations, said, “The honor of Kobe Bryant’s jersey retirement is well deserved.” Lakers CEO, Jeanie Buss, said, “Kobe’s jerseys are taking their rightful home next to the greatest Lakers of all time.” She also said,”Once again, Lakers fans will celebrate our hero, and once again, our foes will envy the legendary Kobe Bryant.” Kobe has accomplished many incredible achievements during his 20 year career in the NBA. For the entire 20 seasons of his career, Kobe has played on the Lakers. This is the longest amount of seasons a player has played for one NBA team. He won five NBA championships in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010 and he was chosen as the NBA Finals MVP two times in the years of 2009, 2010. Kobe was chosen as an NBA All Star 18 times. In the year of 1997, Kobe won the Slam Dunk Contest and became a Slam Dunk Champion. In a game with the Raptors on January 22, 2006, Kobe exploded and made 81 points, which is the 2nd most points ever made in a NBA game. The Lakers beat the Raptors 122-104 and NBA observers were amazed by Kobe’s performance. Kobe also was awarded 12 All-Defensive Team selections and 9 NBA All Defensive first team selections. This honor is only given to the best defensive players during the regular season. Kobe made 12 3-pointers in a game against Seattle, which is the the 2nd most 3-pointers made in a game. As a part of Team USA in the Olympics, Kobe won 2 basketball gold medals on the years of 2008 and 2012. Kobe has had one of the most successful careers in the NBA. He was one of the greatest players in history and he will a the hero to Lakers fans forever. Kobe surely deserves to have both of his jerseys to be retired.
