Over the years the idea of vitamin D deficiency may have changed. Learning about it in reptiles may help how we take care of our pet reptiles because if they’re not cared for properly may affect their health and can cause death. Also Learning how it can affect someone is also very important because the body needs to be cared for very carefully. Vitamin D levels have to be normal in the body for it to function right. Bearded dragons are common lizards and one of the best pet lizards that a person can have. There are eight different species of bearded dragons, but the most common and popular species is the Inland or Central Bearded Dragon, which is from the southern part of Australia. They are very easy to care for as long as the owner is doing it right, making sure that that are healthy and well cared for. Some common diseases for bearded dragons are metabolic bone disease, infectious stomatitis, parasites, respiratory infections and hypervitaminosis D. Metabolic bone disease is a difficult disease. It is also of the most common diseases that occurs in a pet beardie. It mostly occurs when they get the wrong diet that is low in calcium and vitamin D. Infectious stomatitis isn’t as common in bearded dragons as it is in iguanas but it can still happen. It’s a bacterial infection in the gums, swollen gum. Parasites are common in bearded dragons, but the pet beardie might not show any signs, you will only know from an annual vet examinations. It may cause diarrhea and weight loss in the beardie. Respiratory infections, or as it can also be called pneumonia, may occur in the pet when they are stressed, don’t have a good and/or healthy diet, cold, or dirty conditions. Hypervitaminosis D is when the owner over does their supplements of vitamins in the beardies diet, or feed it dog or cat food. There are many different signs that a bearded dragon might be sick. It depends on the type disease that may occur. Some diseases have specific symptoms. For example, swelling of the jaw can be a sign of metabolic bone disease. Other symptoms, such as their lack of appetite, depression, are not specific to one disease. But how are those diseases treated? Well, for metabolic bone disease, it requires for the owner to administer injectable or oral calcium in the mouth of the beardie. Also maybe a multivitamin or a supplement, just a medication to put the calcium back into the body of the beardie. The diet must be a good diet and they need to have the right UV light that is provided for them. An owner must know the proper lights to get. Also several deworming medications are available for the beardies with the parasites. It is also possible to use oral environmental cleaning for their mouth at the vet. A respiratory infection can be diagnosed from an x ray, blood test, etc. it will be treated with oral and injectable antibiotics. If severe they may have to be hospitalized. Hypervitaminitits D can be treated by being hospitalized so they can get a good diet and need a drug to lower the level of the vitamins to normal. Bearded Dragons may possibly not need vitamin D to survive, unless they are babies, but it can make them tired and unmotivated. As stated in the previous paragraph, They do need a UV light for their cages to keep them warm and so that they can get the vitamin D from it but it still doesn’t help as much as actually being in the sunlight. It’s best to bring the pet bearded dragons outside when it is warm and sunny. Put them on the porch, only if there is a sunny area where the sun is hitting, or put them in the grass or floor wherever the sun it hitting. Bearded dragons receive vitamin D from natural lighting, sunlight. Bearded Dragons aren’t pets that should be trapped in their cages 24/7, they need to get out and breathe. When it is exposed to the UVB that how the bearded dragon can receive vitamin D. They can also get it from some supplements that they have in the store for the bearded dragons. It can be used mainly when their lights aren’t giving them enough vitamin D in their body. It also explains how it can affect their bodies from when they are just hatched to when they are fully grown. There was a study that was done on about 84 newly hatched bearded dragons, 40 males and 44 females. As soon as they were hatched they were given six levels of vitamin D supplements or six levels of UVB light exposures on the bodies. The supplements have to be from 0 to 400%. For the light exposure, they were supposed to be under the lights for about 2 hours to 12 hours. When the beardies turned 3 and 6 months old, they had blood taken out of the body to see how their vitamin D levels are in their body after the supplements they got and from the light exposures. The levels of 25(OH)D3, 25(OH)D3 stands for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3,  did not increase but the plasma concentration levels of 1,25(OH)D3 did change when they were 3 months old. At 6 months, 25(OH)D3 and 1,25(OH)D3 both had increased from the vitamin D supplements. The study had showed  that 2 hours of UVB helps that metabolism in the bearded dragons body’s growth. The supplements of vitamin D had raised the plasma concentrations in the bearded dragon’s body. As stated before baby beardies need a daily dose of vitamin D3 and calcium for survive. Juvenile beardies my need vitamin D3 3-4 time a week to be able to survive. Adult beardies don’t really need that much of vitamin D3 to survive but an owner should still give the beardie vitamin D3 at least once a week. There are supplements that can be given to a bearded dragon. A lot of supplements have vitamin D and calcium in them. Some supplements are Rep Cal calcium with vitamin D3, any calcium plus supplements. Crickets can also be dusted in calcium with vitamin D3 powder, when the beardie eats the cricket he will consume the vitamin D.  There also are some foods that a bearded dragon can consume for the vitamin D to enter the body. But sunlight is the absolute best way for a bearded dragon to get vitamin D in their system. They can’t get it every day but at least once or twice a week is best. Vitamin D deficiency can also affect human as well. It can occur in adults as well as children. It may occur more in adults because they don’t get out as much as the childrens do. A child goes outside and plays in the park, plays with friends, runs, skate, ride a bike. A child is more active than an adult may be. But there are some adults who are pretty active as well, however it’s not as active and hyper as a child. Children also have a lot more energy than an adult may have. Many people deal with the lack of vitamin D in their body and it is now a huge global problem affecting almost a billion people globally. Vitamin D has been known to be involved in calcium homeostasis and bone health since it was discovered in 1921. It can mainly affects the rickets child who don’t have enough vitamin D in their body and as well as humans. There are a number of problems caused by vitamin D deficiency, for example skeletal diseases, metabolic disorders, cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, infections, etc. Trying to bring a person’s vitamin D levels back up to normal is harder than just getting more sunlight and/or just taking a pill. They do help with a person’s health, but when a person lacks them they can get major health problems in their body. Doctors may suggest for a patient to take a supplement to even out the levels but may be unsure on which one to use, how much can be consumed, and what type of vitamin D is needed.There are two different type of vitamin D. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin but there are two forms of vitamin D, which are D2 and D3. Vitamin D2, also known as ergocalciferol, can come from plant foods and some supplements while vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is absorbed from your skin being exposed to UVB, which can be from radiation in sunlight, and foods. Fish liver oils are a great choice to get vitamin D into the body. Vitamin D can be found in small in amounts in beef liver, cheese, egg yolks. However, all of these food sources tend to have more of vitamin D3 in them than vitamin D2. Some mushrooms do have small amounts of vitamin D2 because of the exposure that they can get from the sun. Both D2 and D3 are biologically inert. Once it is absorbed from the intestines, they move into the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Then it goes to the kidneys, and into selective tissue. A lot of people need to be careful in the amount of UVB lighting that they get because it can have a bad effect of the skin. Too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. UV-B radiation is from the sun. It’s the most important risk factor for skin cancer and because of it researchers are look at what role vitamin D plays in skin cancer. This includes the time, day, season, latitude, altitude, clothing, and sunscreen use. Even some of those people that use the exposure to UVB lighting can still have vitamin D deficiency, possibly from cultural habit and/or dress. Even for elderly’s produce 75% less vitamin D3 than young adults. Some think that enough exposure to the sun can bring up vitamin D levels and also can protect the skin from getting damaged which is a benefit to skin cancer survival. Research shows that it can also protect from other cancers, such as breast cancer. Thinking that staying away from the sun is a good thing. The sun may actually help you as long as when you go outside you put sunscreen on to protect you from skin cancer. If someone is housebound, when they go outside in the sun they should use an umbrella, or  possibly wear a hat. If you have dark pigmented skin when your skin is exposed to the sunlight you can consume vitamin D but older people with darker skin are at risk to get vitamin D deficiency. When people get older it’s harder for their kidneys to get vitamin D in its active form. Which makes them at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Medical problems, such as Crohn’s disease and celiac disease, can affect your way to absorb vitamin D. If someone is obese, it’s also hard for them.In the 20th century it seemed that about 90% of the children that had lived in New York or Boston had dealt with rickets and a bone forming disease. For skeletal diseases, anyone who was taking calcium had to take it with vitamin D because it helps calcium get in the gut and helps with the calcium level in the body to help with the development of the bones and prevents low blood calcium levels that may lead to tetany, which is a condition caused by intermittent muscular spasms, that can be caused by malfunction of the parathyroid glands and a consequent deficiency of calcium with vitamin D.  It can first occur in the liver and can convert into 25(OH)D, can also be known as calcidiol. Then is can occur in the kidneys which can convert to active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin or 1,25(OH)D, which can also be known as calcitriol. Vitamin D it also helps with the growth of bones and bone remodeling. It can prevent rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Vitamin D and calcium together can help the adults with osteomalacia. It can have other roles in the body, such as cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduction of inflammation. If someone stay away from the sun, have a milk allergy, or have a strict vegan diet they could possibly have vitamin D deficiency. As stated previously, vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D is needed for  bones to be strong and healthy also helps with the calcium level in the body. Vitamin D deficiency is common with rickets, or fragile bones, diseases in while the bone tissue isn’t healthy leading to the bones being soft. Some symptoms like bone pain and the muscle being weak. Low vitamin D levels can put you health at risk. Low blood levels of vitamin D can be a part of cancer, asthma in children, etc. Researchers have found out that vitamin D can protect and prevent thing that occur, such as type 1 and 2 of diabetes, hypertension, etc. Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by many things. If you don’t have a good diet you can get it, such as a strict diet. But again you can get vitamin D from certain kind of foods. A way that doctors can find out where the levels of vitamin D in the body may be is to do some blood test. The way they test for vitamin D deficiency is by doing a blood test is because vitamin D is absorbed from the blood cells and fat cells. That is also why a person and a bearded dragon must take supplements because they go into the bloodstream.
