Edgar Allen Poe was a writer, poet, critic and editor known best for short stories and poems that consist of mystery and the macabre. His stories are usually involving death because five people he loved died, and that affected his writing style. In the “Masque of Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe constructs the theme that death is inevitable through the use of imagery and symbolism. When senses are included in the writing, the reader can better understand the theme.Imagery involves all sensory input to clarify the writers intent. For example, Poe writes, “His vesture was dabbled in blood–and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror”(Poe 186-187). This illustrates the visual imagery of how the red death looks and feels to the observer it makes the reader feel that death is inevitable. “The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds upon a carpet of the same material and hue. But in this chamber only, the colour of the windows failed to correspond with the decorations. The panes here were scarlet–a deep blood colour”(poe 43-73).This description makes the reader picture of a funeral room where clothing, curtains and coffins always are red and black. The reader than thinks of the certainty if his own death. Poe not only uses imagery to create death is inevitable but he also uses symbolism.Symbolism is another approach that poe uses to advance his theme.A good example would be ” And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay”(Poe 246-251).The clock symbolizes that death is getting closer and closer throughout the story. The guests generally are carefree and disregard what is happening outside the walls of the castle, but as the clock chimes, it reminds them of the horrible plague outside. “there was a brief disconcert of the whole gay company; and while the chimes of the clock yet rang, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in confused reverie or meditation” (Poe 84).The clock is located in the last room of the castle, this room is all red and black, that contains no light and darkness symbolizes death. As ebony wood is a dark color, furthering the theme of death. Therefore, Poe uses symbolism to further enhance his claim. Finally,In the Masque of Red Death,Poe establishes that death is ineluctable through the use of imagery and symbolism.Poe’s general message to all people, is that death is timeless and enduring.
