As consideration in the workplace. When taking

As many of us have experiences at least once a year, we all
go through annual checkups at our doctor’s office. The nurse is very careful of
vital signs, weight changes or any physical changes that may have occurred over
a span of time. Many of us really think if they consider our mental health. Along
with physical health and the assessment of our bodies, mental health is a very
important as well. A healthy body is useless without a healthy mind. Good
mental health provides us with a feeling of well-being and gives us the strength
we need to face the challenges of everyday life. According to the federal
Department of Health and Human Services estimates that only 17 percent of the
U.S population is functioning at optimal mental health—and one in five people live
with a diagnosable mental health condition at any given time (CDC,2013).

Parker made a difference when it came to standing up and making it clear that
mental health is crucial. She works for a major corporation as a web develops
in Ann Arbor, Michigan and took the big step on taking a few days off. She
emailed her colleagues to say she was using her sick days to focus on her
mental health and come back fresh. Her CEO, Ben Congleton, answered her email

I just wanted to personally thank
you for sending emails like this—every time you do, I use it as a reminder of
the importance of using sick days for mental health—I can’t believe this is not
standard practice at all organizations. You are an example to us all and help
cut through the stigma so we can bring our whole selves to work.” (Morin,2017).

Parker felt moved by the response she received by her boss
and decided to share her positive response on social media such as Facebook and
Twitter. Before she knew it, her story and screenshots of her email went viral
and started discussion across social media and how mental health should be
taken into consideration in the workplace.

            When taking
a sick day off from work, people assume you are sick with the flu or a doctor’s
appointment because you’re sick.  Your coworkers
and boss would never call you weak but would say, “hope you get better.” So why
is it when someone with a mental health issue has breakdown, is automatically
called weak. Mental health doesn’t seem to get the same respect as physical illness.

People with mental illness are constantly told to get over it when struggling
with diseases such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. Like I mentioned
before mental health is a part of our overall health and should be taken as importantly
as our physical health. Madalyn was very lucky to have an employer that supported
her decision to take control of her mental health instead of her coming into
work and not being to perform up to her best ability.

            In India,
mental health is seen very differently. India has the highest number of
suicides in the world. According to the World Health organization, of 804,000 suicides
recorded worldwide in 2012; 258,000 occurs in India. Indian youths between the
ages of 15 and 29 years old kill themselves at a rate of 35.5deaths per 100,000
(CDC,2013). India has a belief that children who are raised in a certain environment
are predisposed to any behaviors they may display in the future.  Dr. Patel, from Harvard Medical School, had
the opportunity to attend a world congress meeting on Adolescent health and was
able to explain the facts he researched on a trip he made to India. Below is
his statement:

coming in conflict with the law is almost always the result of social
deprivation. The effects of social deprivation effect the child’s ability to
understand what is socially acceptable and what is anti-social. For example, if
a child grows up in a family where the mother is being regularly beaten or the
father is an alcoholic or grows up in a neighborhood where theft and violence
is routine, this is going to affect the way s/he interacts with other people (Firstpost,2017).

He states that India has realized
that their mental health in the population is deteriorating. Instead of the
Indian government offering more services to their people in order to better
mental health. The Indian government ordered cutbacks in the health budget,
nearly almost 20 percent. Now you may ask yourself why doesn’t this matter?
Well currently, India only had one psychiatrist for every 343,000 Indians
(Board,2014). It is almost impossible for them to keep up with their patients
and try to reduce the suicide rates. Currently pending, India announced their intentions
of starting a new policy that provides universal mental health services. It
awaits the approval by parliament, and if approved it would be very beneficial
to the country in efforts of decreasing their mental illness cases (MedCity

Comparison between the resources available in India and
the United States is very different. We have to grateful that we have the availability
of all types of physicians and have the opportunity to have free services
depending on the eligibility of our insurance. We have hotlines such as the
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255). (NIH,2017) We are also
able to walk into some hospitals and receive treatment even without having insurance.

In comparison to India, health insurance is seen as not being a right. If they
want treatment, they have to be able to pay for it out of pocket. It isn’t as
flexible to receive medical attention without being judged for the background the
Indian people grew up in.
